What is the Best Profession for a Mage - How to Choose Based on DPS!

Published on by makro

Choosing the best profession for your Mage in World of Warcraft can save you from a lot of pain! The new expansion of Catatclysm has brought a lot of changes and not all professions seem to be equal. While there many reasons to choose a particular profession, I'll be going over the choices with a priority on maximizing damage per second (DPS).

Engineering - Synapse Springs: grants the player 480 intelligence for 12 seconds. This ability is applied to player's gloves and is on a 1 minute cooldown time. The end result is gain of roughly 96 intelligence. Awesome!

Nitro Boosts: No more critical strike bonuses, and now only a run speed increase. However, it is quite dangerous to use because sometimes this effect will malfunction! Probably best to forget about it.

Lightweight Bio-Optic Killshades: A special piece of head-gear with special engineering sockets. The helmet also contains two different cogwheels, each granting 208 points in a different combat stat. A great item!

Engineering enchants no longer overwrite regular enchantments on equipment anymore!

Tailoring - Lightweave Embroidery: Grants the player 580 intelligence for 15 seconds with a 35% chance to proc. This means that each spell you cast a spell you have a 35% chance to trigger the effect. However, there is a 50 second internal cooldown, so keep that in mind. The maximum benefit received from this effect will be somewhere around 174 intelligence. However, due to a lot of uncontrollable factors, most likely the number will be a lot less.

Jewelcrafting: This profession gives players access to special gems which further increase statistics. For example, a mage will have access to 67 Int Gems. The end result is an additional81 intelligence when compared to socketing the same gear with a Brilliant Inferno Ruby. You can get this bonus for other combat ratings too! You should probably stick to intelligence though because it gives the most benefit to a mage.

Blacksmithing: You gain two additional sockets for mastering this profession. One for the bracer, and one for gloves - this results in a gain of 80 intelligence.

Alchemy - Mixology: adds extra 80 intelligence when using Flask of the Draconic Mind and also doubles the duration of the flask.

Enchanting: Enables you to enchant two of your rings adding 40 intelligence to each ring. Result: +80 Int.

Inscription - Felfire Inscription: is an increase of 80 intelligence to your shoulder piece. Ultimately, this is a real time-saver because you don't have to worry about grinding for a Greater Inscription Charged Lodestone.

Leatherworking - Draconic Embossment: adds 130 intellect to your bracers. Gain of 80 intellect over traditional means.

Herbalism - Lifeblood: Grants the player 480 Haste for 20 seconds on a 2 min cooldown. This roughly translates to 80 additional haste.

Skinning - Master of Anatomy: Increases your critical strike rating by 80.

Mining - Toughness: Increases your stamina by 120. Not very useful!
